Council gives £2.3m Coleford redevelopment the go ahead

Forest of Dean District Council has given its backing to a £2.3m redevelopment in Coleford.

The innovative designs were presented to the 19 October full council meeting where members voted unanimously to support the ‘Lawnstone Square’ regeneration project.

The scheme will see a new town square and gardens, a mix of high quality housing and commercial units suitable for small business start-ups on the vacant site next to the District Council offices.

As well as improving the overall look of a prominent area of the town’s High Street and the ‘gateway’ to the historic clock tower, the ‘Lawnstone Square’ development will provide the Council with an income stream, which will be used to improve services for residents.

The initial ‘Lawnstone Square’ plans were revisited by the design team, following a first round of public consultation where they received a mixed-response.  The latest designs include the changes made as a result of the public feedback received to date and meetings with the Coleford Neighbourhood Development Plan Group.  A second round of consultation has now begun and will run until Friday 3 November.

The revised designs will be on display in the District Council’s main reception, the foyer of the Main Place, Coleford Tourism Information Centre and Five Acres Leisure Centre reception.  Explanatory leaflets, which include an area for feedback will be available at the exhibition stands.  Alternatively comments can also be emailed to

Feedback received from this latest consultation will help form the final design for a planning application which will be submitted to the Council in late November.  If approved construction is likely to start early next year.

Councillor Richard Leppington, Cabinet Member for Development, Asset Management, Planning Policy, Infrastructure and Housing said: “These latest designs are testament to the fact that we’ve listened to feedback from residents and stakeholders and have updated the plans to produce an innovative development that will enhance the look and vitality of the town.

This is our opportunity to provide new homes, commercial units and a public space right in the heart of Coleford and we encourage people to view the revised designs during this second round of consultation and let us know your views.”
