New mayor for Cheltenham


The annual inauguration of the mayor will be held at Cheltenham Town Hall at 6.30pm tomorrow and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Councillor Klara Sudbury will step into her predecessor, Councillor Chris Ryder’s, shoes and Councillor Bernard Fisher will be made deputy mayor at the ceremony.

The mayor chairs the council and represents the borough at many local business and charity events throughout the year. This year, the new mayor has decided to focus her fundraising efforts towards: Holly Gazzard Trust and Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.

The Holly Gazzard Trust exists to help reduce domestic violence through creating and delivering programmes on domestic abuse and promoting healthy relationships to schools and colleges.

The Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity raises funds to make a real difference for their patients, their families and the staff who treat them and work at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals as well as the Stroud Maternity Unit.

To kick start the fundraising for these charities, the mayor’s charity launch appeal will take place 31 May 2017 6-8 pm at Cheltenham College. Tickets are available by emailing Attendance is by invitation only.

Councillor Klara Sudbury, said: “I am really looking forward to representing Cheltenham this year as mayor. I’m proud to be able to promote the town and all that it has to offer especially our amazing volunteer groups and beautiful parks and gardens.

“I love meeting people and learning about their different causes, and hope to get involved wherever I can. I’ve chosen to work with two wonderful Cheltenham-based charities, the Hollie Gazzard Trust and Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals charity. Both give much needed care to our communities and I’m pleased to be able to support them.”

The Chamber of Commerce sponsored Medal of Honour recipient for 2017 is Michael Donnelly.
