Celebrations as work starts on £1.6million Stroud District Council sheltered housing scheme

Stroud District Council and building contractor EG Carter & Co Ltd are celebrating the start of a £1.6million housing scheme in Nailsworth.

Eleven new apartments for older people will be built on the land at Tanners Piece, which was formerly occupied by eight prefabricated reinforced concrete bungalows which had come to the end of their useful life.

The project is part of Stroud District Council’s £8million investment in modernising and rebuilding some of  its sheltered housing schemes to ensure they meet the needs of an ageing population. Nationally it is expected that there will be a significant increase in the number of older people over the next 20 years, and Stroud district is likely to be no exception.

The scheme has been designed by Quattro Design Architects to enable independent living and will provide high quality homes in a safe and secure environment. Features include light, spacious rooms, a secure scooter store and lift to the first floors.

Chas Townley, chair of SDC’s Housing Committee said: “I am really pleased to see work starting on site to provide eleven new flats for older people in Nailsworth. We would like to do much more housing for people of all ages, but that depends on the Government allowing the council to borrow more  to invest in new housing across the district. There are more than 3000 people currently on the housing register, which just shows the need is very large.”

Matthew Vye, Partnership Housing Manager at EG Carter & Co Ltd added: “E G Carter is both proud and excited to be working with Stroud District Council to provide these new apartments for older people in the area. As a local contractor it is even more special to be able to work close to our base, bringing our experience and expertise to provide local people with a quality new home.”

The scheme is expected to be completed in summer 2019.

Stroud District Council is the only local authority in Gloucestershire which still owns and manages council houses.
