The artificial grass at Boot’s Corner is set to go next year as council leaders have backed plans for a newly designed “pocket park” in Cheltenham.
The design for the new space at Clarence Fountain will give shoppers and visitors a much improved and accessible experience, according to Cheltenham Borough Council.
The plinth had temporary seating and artificial grass installed as part of the trial closure.
And the council says these temporary measures have successfully allowed the plinth to be well used by residents and visitors alike.
However, it was always their intention to create and deliver a more permanent, attractive, green space for everyone to enjoy.
The proposed upgrades are expected to cost around £85,000 and will include the planting of trees which will encourage biodiversity and improve air quality.
The design also includes improved seating, space for wheelchairs to make the area more inclusive, as well as a more attractive and durable resin bound finish with steel skirt.
Cabinet member for climate emergency Max Wilkinson (Lib Dem, Oakley) told last night’s (December 21) council meeting that more people have been using the area over the last few years.
“We all know that the area around Clarence Fountain hasn’t been the least divisive place in town over the last few years.
“But this is a really positive thing that will come out of it in the end.
“What they liked was the seating. What they liked less was the plastic, artificial grass.”
“There will be trees and shrubs and that will help in the summer to cool the area and it will be good for biodiversity too.”
He said the council is working for a spring launch for the pocket park.
The cabinet voted unanimously to support the proposals.
