There are now just a few days to go until people from across Gloucestershire and beyond, store take part in a commemoration of the outbreak of World War One.

Gloucestershire County Council will join millions of people across the country to take part in LIGHTS OUT on Monday 4th August.

The event will see people turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm, viagra leaving on either a single candle or light as a mark of respect and to reflect on the significance of the historic date.

LIGHTS OUT is the headline project of the cultural programme ‘14-18 NOW’ and more than a million candles are expected to be lit.

One of these will be in the county council’s Shire Hall where the lights in the building will be switched-off to allow a candle to illuminate reception.

Gloucester City Council and Stroud District Council are also getting involved and a candlelit vigil will be held at Tewkesbury Abbey from 10pm-11pm. Canon Paul Williams, cialis Vicar of Tewkesbury, will lead prayers and poems will be read.

Iconic landmarks across the country including the Houses of Parliament and the Eden Project are also participating.

The idea to light a candle to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War is inspired by the famous words of the wartime Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey. As the dreaded moment of the outbreak of war loomed, he said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”

Leader of Gloucestershire County Council, Cllr Mark Hawthorne said: “It is a very important and emotive anniversary and we are pleased to be taking part by lighting a candle in the reception at Shire Hall. I hope people across the county will take the time out to reflect about all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our futures.”
