Full of Life Gloucestershire campaign to be launched this week

Older people can learn more about the advice and activities available to them at the launch of this year’s Full of Life Gloucestershire campaign this week.

Gloucestershire County Council is launching the campaign at SkillZONE on Tuffley Lane, no rx Gloucester, on Wednesday 1st October with an event running from 10am – 12noon.

The event is being held on the same day as the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, which is marked around the world and here in Gloucestershire the day is a great opportunity to raise awareness of what is on offer to help older people stay in good health and reduce social isolation.

The Department of Work and Pensions Full of Life national campaign will run throughout October in Gloucestershire and aims to get large numbers of older people to attend events where they can find out information which will help them stay safe, healthy and independent in their own communities.

A vintage street party, musical performances, dancing and refreshments will all be among the activities on offer next Wednesday at SkillZONE.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy craft taster sessions and tours of the centre, where the house on the site will be decked out in the latest Telecare equipment, which helps people to stay safe and independent at home.

Members of community hubs across the county have been invited to attend. The hubs offer a place for older people to meet friends, take part in physical activities and enjoy life long interests.

Cllr Dorcas Binns Cabinet member for older people said: “Full of Life is a great campaign and throughout October we will be offering a wide range of activities and information which we hope will benefit older people, helping them to stay healthy, active and try new things.

“Following the launch event we will also be holding Full of Life pop-up shops across the county to spread the word even further.”

Full of Life pop-up shops are being held in October, sharing information, activities and offering taster sessions on a range of subjects, with free tea, coffee and refreshments for older people, their families, friends and carers.

As well as playing Wii Fit games, visitors will also be able to gain information on Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue, Gloucestershire Police, podiatry and diabetes services, benefits, housing and charity.
