A protest which was held in Gloucester yesterday afternoon (30 August) concluded peacefully with no arrests made.
Officers were visible in the Barnwood area to ensure safe and legal protest activity and any disruption to residents, visitors and businesses was kept to a minimum.
Assistant Chief Constable Arman Mathieson said: “At yesterday’s protest we gradually deployed police officers in a thoughtful and proportionate manner.
“This was done to ensure we carefully balanced the rights of those who wanted to peacefully protest with the rights of the wider community, whilst ensuring only minor disruption occurred.
“It is disappointing that local traffic was impacted however I am pleased to say that both protest groups worked with us before and during the protest and, as a direct result, we did not need to enforce protest legislation or make any arrests.
“The role of the police at such a protest is to keep everyone safe and carefully balance everyone’s individual rights, without fear or favour.
“I’m proud of the way in which all officers and staff involved achieved that aim and appreciate the engagement from the local community, both protest groups, local partners and neighbouring police forces and their officers.
“Should anyone wish to speak with the police, local community officers will continue to patrol the area.”
