A major refurbishment project is under way at Oxstalls Sports Park as part of an £8 million investment to modernise leisure facilities across Gloucester.
Freedom Leisure, which operates the site on behalf of Gloucester City Council, has begun work on improvements that will run from February through to April 2026.
The scheme forms part of the council’s wider programme to revamp both GL1 Leisure Centre and Oxstalls, with the aim of enhancing facilities and supporting the health and wellbeing of residents.
New social hub at the heart of plans
Central to the refurbishment is the creation of a new social hub within the sports park. The redesigned space will offer a brighter, more comfortable and environmentally friendly setting where visitors can relax with a coffee or meet friends before and after activities.
The upgraded catering offer will include a full range of hot and soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and a selection of hot food, snacks and light bites.
Improvements to pitches and facilities
The project also includes practical upgrades to sporting facilities across the site. Indoor courts and outdoor pitches will benefit from enhanced lighting to improve visibility and playing conditions, while the grass pitch changing rooms will be refurbished to provide better comfort and quality for teams and match officials.
Oxstalls Sports Park is already a popular destination thanks to its extensive pitch provision and free parking. The improvements are designed to strengthen its position as a key sporting venue in the city.
Nick Charlton, Area Manager at Freedom Leisure, said the investment demonstrated a continued commitment to improving facilities for local clubs, players and visitors. He added that the new hub would complement the existing sports provision and help more people stay active and connected in their community.
Councillor Caroline Courtney, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said the council was pleased to see the investment progressing. She said the improvements would support residents’ health and wellbeing, while encouraging new users to try the facilities.
The refurbishment reflects the ongoing partnership between Freedom Leisure and Gloucester City Council to deliver sustainable, high-quality community leisure spaces. Further updates are expected as work continues toward completion in April 2026.
