Gloucester is putting its brightest talents, most-loved businesses and unsung community heroes centre stage this December with the launch of ‘Shine a Light on Local’, a festive campaign designed to celebrate the people who make the city centre glow.
Running throughout the month, the initiative by Gloucester BID highlights independent traders, charities, eateries and inspirational residents through a series of special interviews and Christmassy photoshoots featuring the BID’s giant illuminated bauble — now a familiar landmark of the city’s seasonal celebrations.
From family-run shops and creative start-ups to volunteers and local changemakers, the campaign aims to spotlight the individuals who bring warmth, character and a sense of togetherness to Gloucester during the busiest time of year.
Gloucester MP Alex McIntyre praised the initiative, saying: “Local to me means community and creativity. By supporting our amazing local businesses, we’re investing in the creativity that makes our community special. I’d really encourage everyone to support the Shine a Light on Local campaign this Christmas — whether that’s buying locally made presents, shouting about your favourite business online, or leaving a five-star review.”
Claire Knight, Marketing & Business Engagement Lead at Gloucester BID, said the campaign is about recognising the stories behind the storefronts:
“We’re incredibly excited to shine a light on all the wonderful businesses, charities, and local people who make Gloucester such a vibrant and welcoming city. Independent retailers, passionate business owners, community heroes — these are the people who bring real heart to our high street.
“We’ll be sharing these stories across our social media channels all month long. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see if your favourite local has been featured, and join us in celebrating the incredible individuals who help make Gloucester so special.”
Residents are encouraged to take part by shopping local, supporting neighbourhood businesses and engaging with the campaign online — spreading festive cheer and strengthening Gloucester’s community spirit.
