A popular YouTube couple who visit the nation’s pubs have given their verdict on some of Gloucester’s bars.
Dale Harvey and his wife Holly run the Great British Pub Crawl channel.
The couple are on a mission to drink their way through every single pub across the entire United Kingdom.
Here’s what they thought…
1. Doctor Fosters – Gloucester Docks
‘Doctor Foster’ which is in one of the fabulous old warehouse buildings. It’s been here for about 6 months at the moment and has an incredible looking menu, a great beer line up (1 cask and plenty of keg craft choices) and really lovely staff.
It’s dog friendly, rustic and cosy and was the perfect introduction for us to Gloucester today.
2. Blue Bamboo – Gloucester Docks
Stop two was a lovely little sports bar called ‘Blue Bamboo’ that might not have any ales on, but has a very decent keg line up on offer.
Plenty of good sports memorabilia on the walls and plenty of screens for such a small bar area.
Very nicely presented little place that feels like a slightly more up market style sports bar than you’ll usually find… great little tapas menu also on offer.
3. The Lord High Constable – Gloucester Docks
The Lord High Constable Of England’ and not only is it a lovely looking place… it has possibly the best Spoons Carpet that we’ve found so far.
4. Gloucester Brewery – Gloucester Docks
‘Gloucester Brewery’ is an absolutely belting little place with a brilliant array of beers on offer.
It’s a proper Brewery tap with the cylinders on show… a decent sized seating area and beers that will suit all tastes… lovely guys… BRILLIANT beers, dog friendly and welcoming… I sampled the NEIPA of theirs and was mega impressed!
5. Brewhouse & Kitchen – Gloucester Quays
‘Brewhouse & Kitchen’ who are fast becoming my favourite ‘chain’ place in the UK.
So… until recently, despite having visited a number of their sites… I didn’t know that each Brewhouse has its own head brewer and recipes for their beers… so essentially you’ll never get the ‘same’ strand of beer in each pub and they all actually have their own unique names on top of being the beer style… so if you want to rack up some new beers on Untappd… you can do it in Brewhouse… as they are all individually listed, with their own unique names under each venue on the app.

6. The New Inn – Northgate Street
‘The New Inn’ which has stood on that site since 1450… and is Gloucester’s ‘most haunted place’ according to legend.
Well… we were lucky enough to be checked in by the lovely Alice, who despite her mere 24 years on this earth, REALLY knows her history and filled us in (even on the YT video) about the FULL history of this grand old place, it’s ghostly goings on and the plans for the future… and if you’re looking for an interesting stay in the city centre or are interested in ghostly goings on… this is DEFINITELY the place for you… it’s a pretty incredible and surreal setting… and listening to Alice talk so passionately and factually about what has occurred at the hotel over the last 600+ years was an absolute pleasure.
7. The Sword Inn – Westgate Street
‘The Sword Inn’ is an early 17th century pub with plenty of charm and charisma about it.
The lovely lady running the bar made us feel very welcome and the beer line up, despite lacking any ales, has plenty of keg choices and the pub has the classic CU vibe to it, with a community feel and plenty of screens.
8. The Fountain Inn – Westgate Street
‘The Fountain Inn’ which is another old gem… Dating back to the 16th Century… there is plenty of olden day charm and swagger amongst this ones hallowed walls… with a glorious courtyard that’s the first view you’ll get as you walk through the small alley way and a grand open plan feel about the bar area, you’ll find a wealth of good ales on offer, a warming fire going on and a great food offering… a great little gem of a place!
9. The Drunken Duck – Bull Lane
An absolute belter of a micropub called ‘The Drunken Duck’ – now, I’ve followed these guys on social media for a while now with great interest and was really looking forward to visiting and they lived up to every single expectation I had as this is just a cracking little venue with plenty of great beers to choose from of both keg and cask and a super bunch of locals using the place! A top notch vibe, pool table on an upper floor and pretty much everything you could hope for from a micropub! A brilliant little place.
10. The Pelican Inn – St Mary’s Street
‘The Pelican Inn’ and the short walk around the back of the cathedral is absolutely worth it as you’ll find a bonafide winner of a pub with no less than TEN hand pulls on offer and a banging can selection of excellent craft stuff! A lovely open fire was heating the place perfectly from the cold frosty evening and there is a homely vibe about this fantastic little pub.
11. The Abbey – Northgate Street
‘The Abbey’ which is a HUGE Stonegate pub. It definitely feels like its aimed at the younger clientele of the city than the pubs we’ve been to so far but the keg beers on offer cover a wide variety… there are plenty of screens, a pool table and it’s dog friendly.
12. The Imperial Inn – Northgate Street
‘The Imperial Inn’ which is locally referred to as ‘the pub that does Bass’ as its the only one in the city (apparently) that carries the renowned ale… with a lovely tiled frontage, a bit of (unique) live music going on that included a chap playing a wash board… this one is quirky, fun and appealing.
13. Northend Vaults – Northgate Street
‘Northend Vaults’ which bought up our 2nd Craft Union pub of the day… and the first CU we’ve ever been in that doesn’t actually stock WKDs and do that 3 for £6 offer… instead they have VKs and do 2 for £6… which feels like a bit if a jip compared to the normal CU offering 
There was a bit of live music going on from an older chap who was banging out some of the classics (and a bit of Status Quo) and a decent mix of folks of all ages in.
14. The Turks Head – Aldgate Street
‘The Turks Head’ from there which is a proper old school little pub… fully cash only… 3 WONDERFUL ale choices, a brilliant landlady and super selection of keg and cider offerings… a lovely bunch of locals, great little atmosphere and just an all round super little place.
15. The Regal – Aldgate Street
Another Wetherspoons place… which is one of the Lloyds style spoons with music and dancing on the agenda… it’s in a lovely old cinema building and is called ‘The Regal’ and does have a decent ale offering..
16. Robert Raike’s House – Southgate Street
The quite beautiful ‘Robert Raikes’s House’is a mega old building that has a glorious frontage and appeal… it IS a Samuel Smiths pub which made filming inside slightly difficult but I did manage to sneak away from the bar and do my best…
The landlady is lovely and this is honestly, a beautiful pub so if you can overlook Humphrey and his utter nonsense… please do go and give this a visit.
17. The Cross Keys – Cross Keys Lane
‘The Cross Keys’ which is tucked away down an alley and had a party time vibe and DJ in full swing… old building, good mix of folk in… not much to write home about on the beer front but doesn’t need it as its a decent late night option.
18. The Thirsty Pine – Brunswick Road
‘The Thirsty Pine’ which is most definitely the realest craft beer bar of the city… with a truly impressive line up of cask and keg on offer… but if you venture even further into the venue, you’ll also find a Belgian beer bar that has an equally impressive line up and a larger seating area…
A pretty impressive place from start to finish, with lovely staff and a banging vibe… craft beer fans… UNITE… and we can all meet here..
19. Cafe Rene – Southgate Street
Our final stop of the night took us to ‘Cafè Rene’ where we’d heard we would find the perfect blend of craft beer and late night party… which is pretty accurate… as this old school pub, that also boasts and actual WELL alongside a ceiling décor that’s made up entirely of wine bottles, certainly has it going on… the mix of age ranges of customers and feel good atmosphere pretty much make it the perfect way to polish off a night in Gloucester which has been pretty brilliant from start to finish.
