A nine-year-old from Cheltenham has been named one of the world’s top young mathematicians after winning a major international competition.
Jaideep Ammiraju, who attends Gardener’s Lane Primary School, was crowned Level 10 winner in the British Youth International College (BYITC) International Maths Olympiad, held as part of Maths Week Scotland.
The free global competition, now in its eighth year, attracts thousands of entries from children aged four to fourteen. Participants complete 50 maths questions in an hour, with results based on accuracy and speed.
Jaideep’s proud parent, Viswanath, said: “What stands out about BYITC is the balance between learning and fun. My child enjoys every session and has developed a genuine love for mathematics.”
The challenge is based on BYITC’s pioneering Abacus Maths programme, which combines finger counting, abacus and mental techniques. Winners across eleven levels received certificates and prizes for their achievements.
BYITC founder Dr Rashmi Mantri praised all participants: “Every child who took part deserves enormous credit. The scale of global entries shows there’s huge enthusiasm for learning and playing with numbers.”
