A new fitness programme at GL1 Leisure Centre has proved an immediate hit with residents after its first sessions sold out within days of launching.

Operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Gloucester City Council, the leisure centre has introduced Gravity Reformer Pilates, with all 96 available places fully booked on Sunday 1 March.

The programme expands GL1’s group exercise offering and introduces members to one of the fastest-growing fitness trends in the UK. Reformer Pilates uses a specialist machine designed to combine the traditional principles of Pilates with modern technology, allowing participants to perform controlled resistance exercises that build strength, flexibility and core stability.

The successful launch comes as refurbishment works are due to begin at GL1 as part of the council’s wider £8 million investment in leisure facilities across the city.

Planned improvements include a new gym, an upgraded soft play area, new water play features, inclusive EGYM equipment and energy-efficient lighting. The introduction of Gravity Reformer Pilates was not included in the original refurbishment plans and represents an additional enhancement to the centre’s fitness offer.

Nick Charlton, Area Manager at Freedom Leisure, said the response from the community had been overwhelmingly positive.

“The launch of Gravity Reformer Pilates at GL1 has been a fantastic success. Seeing all 96 spaces fully booked on day one demonstrates the appetite for high-quality, innovative fitness experiences within our community,” he said.

“As refurbishment works begin, this additional group exercise class shows our commitment not only to improving facilities but also to expanding the range of activities available. We’re proud to bring this new offering to our members and continue evolving what GL1 provides.”

Caroline Courtney, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Gloucester City Council, said the popularity of the classes highlights how important modern leisure facilities are to local residents.

“I’m delighted that this new activity has been such a success, with residents voting with their feet and showing how much they value these facilities,” she said.

“It’s important that GL1 continues to move with the times, offering modern facilities alongside sports and activities that are growing in popularity. This is why the council is working so closely with our partners, Freedom, to upgrade both GL1 and Oxstalls, and I look forward to seeing the ongoing improvements.”

Residents interested in taking part in upcoming sessions can find more information about memberships and bookings via the GL1 Leisure Centre website or by speaking to staff at the centre.
