The Magnum Ice Cream Company has announced a £50 million upgrade to its Gloucester factory.

The major investment will increase production capacity, modernise infrastructure and install state-of-the-art technology at the site, which produces iconic brands including Viennetta, Twister, Solero and Magnum.

A complete rebuild of the mix plant, new advanced blending systems and additional high-speed production lines will support a targeted 50% boost in output by 2027, compared with 2023 levels.

Founded in 1959, the Gloucester facility is the second-largest ice-cream factory in Europe and manufactures more than 600 million products each year, supplying over 80% of the UK market. Weekly production includes almost 3 million Calippos, 2 million Viennettas and 1 million tubs of Ben & Jerry’s.

The factory employs nearly 500 people and supports hundreds more through local contractors and supply programmes. The planned upgrade will also fund new training and upskilling opportunities for engineering and operations teams.

Peter ter Kulve, CEO of The Magnum Ice Cream Company, said the investment marked “a key milestone” in the firm’s global transformation strategy. “Our investment is a clear signal of our long-term commitment to the UK… ensuring the site remains a centre of excellence for innovation, quality and sustainability as we enter our next chapter.”

Jamie Farrell, Head of Country UK & Ireland, said Gloucester would play “a central role” as the brand prepares to launch as a standalone business.

“This investment reflects our ambition to grow, innovate and continue delighting consumers… Sustainability upgrades, including a 5% energy-efficiency gain and a 20% reduction in food waste, demonstrate our renewed commitment to responsible growth.”

Minister of State for UK Investment Jason Stockwood welcomed the announcement, calling it a vote of confidence in British manufacturing.

“Today’s investment will modernise and significantly increase production… securing the future of the site for decades to come.”
