Gloucester Folk Museum will be hosting a range of events today to celebrate the annual Apple Day.
The museum on Westgate Street, seek Gloucester will once again open their doors to showcase all things apple.
A whole range of events will take place in the Folk Museum garden throughout the day, ed including cider making, arts and crafts, and Morris dancing.
Fergus the horse will be brought in to turn the mill to demonstrate traditional cider making techniques used in Gloucester. He will turn the juicy fruits into pulp which would traditionally have been used to make delicious local cider.
It won’t just be the horse that will take part in the cider making process though, with guests being invited to have a go at crushing apples by hand, and of course, taste the finished product with a cool glass of cider.
In keeping with the theme of the day, guests are also invited to swap recipes for apple pies, crumbles and cakes, and indulge in some apple-y delights in the tea room.
The museum’s brand new ‘Sweet Shoppe’ will also be open for business all day, and the Lassington Oak Morris Men will be on hand to offer some free workshops throughout the day. The Folk Tearooms will also be open, offering hot drinks, cakes and some beautiful homemade soup.
Vicki Hopson, business development manager at Gloucester City Museums, said; “The annual apple day is a really popular event in our social calendar.
“We’ll be running the event as a ‘Taster day’, which means that no admission will be charged. We just hope all visitors will have a great time, make a donation, and come to visit us again.”
Cllr Lise Noakes, cabinet member for culture, said; “Orchards, cider making and all things apple used to be big business in Gloucestershire.
“This event at the Folk Museum gives people a brilliant insight into the past, and the traditions and techniques of apple growing and cider preparation. It’s a fun and informative day out for all the family and I’d encourage everyone to go along.”
The event will take place on Saturday 24th October between 11am and 4pm.
