Women across Gloucestershire are being invited to celebrate movement in all its forms as We Like the Way You Move launches in the county.

This latest This Girl Can activation is designed to support women in finding confidence through movement, whether that’s dancing in the kitchen, joining a walking group, stretching at home, or playing team sports.

In Gloucestershire, the campaign is being led by Active Gloucestershire through the we can move movement, which aims to inspire, connect and enable women to move in ways that work for them. By working with local groups, clubs and organisations, the campaign will showcase some of the great opportunities available across the county, while sharing the stories of women in Gloucestershire to highlight the many different ways they choose to move and inspire others to do the same.

The campaign comes at a crucial time. While This Girl Can has already inspired more than four million women nationally to be more active, many still feel excluded from sport and physical activity. Research shows that only one in ten women from lower-income backgrounds feel they belong in the world of activity, while women make up just 40 per cent of people featured in sport and activity images. Black and South Asian women represent less than 1.5 per cent of those images, despite making up around 11 per cent of the population, and older women, women with disabilities and pregnant women are often absent altogether. This under-representation, combined with barriers such as fear of judgement, lack of time and financial pressures, means that too many women do not feel activity is for them.

We Like the Way You Move seeks to change that by showing that all movement matters. Even 10 minutes of activity can boost energy, mood, sleep and confidence. The campaign aims to shift perceptions of what counts as movement, change the images that represent women in activity, and create safe, supportive spaces where women can feel free to move in ways that work for them.

Since its launch in 2015, This Girl Can has been challenging outdated perceptions of women in sport and activity. With this new local activation, Gloucestershire is proud to stand behind the message at the heart of the campaign: whatever it looks like, wherever it happens, we like the way you move.
