Cheltenham Borough Council has welcomed the news that businesses have voted in favour of a third term for the Cheltenham Business Improvement District (BID), securing its work in the town centre until 2031.

Results of the ballot, held throughout October, were announced on Friday 31 October. With a turnout of 47%, an overwhelming 82% of businesses backed the continuation of the scheme.

A BID allows businesses within a defined area to collectively fund and deliver projects that enhance the local economy, going beyond the services already provided by the council. Cheltenham BID, first established in 2016, delivers marketing and tourism initiatives in partnership with Marketing Cheltenham, as well as town-centre events such as the Cheltenham Big Wheel and the Cheltenham Gift Card.

It is also responsible for improvements to the town’s appearance including upgraded Christmas lights, graffiti removal and its “BID in Bloom” floral displays.

The current BID term runs until 31 March 2026. The latest ballot approval means a new five-year term will begin from April 2026.

Cllr Rowena Hay, leader of Cheltenham Borough Council and a board representative, welcomed the backing. She said: “I am excited for the future of the BID and would like to thank all those businesses who took the time to vote in support of Cheltenham BID.

“Considering the real pressures that our high streets are under — from changing shopping habits to the growth of online retail and the cost-of-living squeeze — it’s more important than ever that we work together to support local traders and keep our town centre vibrant.”
