A royal fruit in honour of the Queen will be used on the menus of a Cheltenham hotel for years to come after staff dug deep to take part in a unique tree-planting initiative.
Green-fingered staff at The Greenway Hotel and Spa, in Shurdington, helped to plant a Bramley Apple Tree in the grounds of the hotel as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.
The initiative invites people from across the country to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee by planting trees, with more than one million planted in the UK already.
Dean Gunston, General Manager of The Greenway Hotel, which is part of the Eden Hotel Collection, said: “When the Queen’s Green Canopy project was announced we knew we wanted to take part in such a special event so we are delighted to add this fruit tree to our gardens.
“Not only will this help to create a legacy in honour of Her Majesty’s long 70-year reign, but it will also help to play a small part in the project’s aim to enhance our environment.
“We will be able to proudly honour Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy by harvesting the fruit to create some special seasonal dishes in our kitchens for many years to come!”
Thousands of schools, community groups and organisations have come together to plant Jubilee trees across the UK to create a green canopy in tribute to the Queen’s years of service.
The Queen issued a written message of thanks at the end of March as the initiative surpassed more than one million trees.
She said: “I am deeply touched that so many community groups, schools, families and individuals have made their own unique contributions to the Green Canopy initiative.
“I hope your Jubilee trees flourish and grow for many years to come, for future generations to enjoy.”
