Gloucestershire County Council wants to talk to people living in Lansdown, price West End and near the train station in Cheltenham about parking in the area.

Acting on concerns raised by local residents the county council has started a public consultation to find out what people think about introducing permit parking in the area.

In September 2014 the council ran a survey which confirmed severe parking congestion in the area; it also provided a lot of information about the nature of the problem. They have also been talking with local resident groups and businesses.

The council believes that a new area-wide permit parking scheme would address these problems because it would help share parking more fairly, price and make it easier for residents to find a parking space close to their homes.

Before any decision is made, they would like to discuss this idea with local people and give them the opportunity to influence the decision.

Three drop-in consultation events will take place where residents can talk about parking issues and potential solutions with council staff:

  • 15th June at Salem Church Hall, St Georges Road, 12.00pm – 7.00pm
  • 17th June at St Mark Church Hall, Church Lane, 12.00pm – 7.00pm
  • 23rd June at Christ Church , Malvern Road, 3.30pm – 7.30pm

If the outcome of the consultation leads to a permit parking scheme residents would be required to pay for a permit and buy vouchers for their visitors.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said, “If you live in Lansdown, the West End or near the railway station please try and come along to one of the events. Your feedback on the different options will help us see which areas want to have changes, which changes would work best and if any changes are needed at all. We’ll also be able to see which times and days the scheme would work best if it was to go ahead.”
