Licensed venues across Cheltenham have introduced a new shared policy on handling identification.

The initiative has been developed through partnership working between venues, police and local authorities as part of Cheltenham Safe.

Under the scheme, false identification handed over at participating venues will be retained for up to 28 days.

Fake IDs will be destroyed immediately, while legitimate IDs may be returned if proof of ownership is provided.

Cheltenham Borough Council says the approach will ensure a consistent response across all venues.

Gloucestershire Police say the policy will also help educate young people about the risks of underage drinking.

The initiative is designed to support door staff and strengthen safety across Cheltenham’s night-time economy.

Officials say the move sends a clear message that fake identification will not be tolerated.

Partners say they will continue working together to create a safer and more welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike.
