Cotswold District Council leader Councillor Mike Evemy has written to Gloucestershire NHS leaders calling for assurances about the future of rural healthcare.

The move follows unanimous support from councillors at a full council meeting on May 20.

Councillors raised concerns that temporary changes to local hospital services could become permanent, affecting communities in places including Cirencester, Moreton-in-Marsh and neighbouring Cheltenham.

They warned that removing local services could force vulnerable residents to travel further for care, with limited public transport making journeys harder in rural areas.

Councillor Paul Hodgkinson described community hospitals as essential and said they were “gems at the heart of our communities”.

A petition calling for local hospitals to be protected has received more than 2,500 signatures.

The council is now awaiting a response from NHS leaders.
