Gloucester City Council is playing its part during this year’s National Recycling Week (Monday 22nd– Sunday 28th June) by reminding residents of the many materials they can recycle.
National Recycling Week is also an opportunity for the city council to say thank you to residents for their recycling efforts in Gloucester. In 2014/2015 220 tonnes of extra material was collected for recycling, stuff the majority of this being food waste. That’s the equivalent of 45 African elephants.
This year’s theme is ‘recycling around the home’ and people are being encouraged to think about all the items that can be recycled from around their home that they might not previously have thought about.
As of March residents have been able to put their food & drink cartons and aerosols in the green recycling box to be collected at the kerbside and can also now recycle their cardboard at one of the supermarket recycling sites located around the city.

Cllr Jim Porter, look cabinet member for the environment at Gloucester City Council, sickness said: “We would like to say a big thank you to our residents for helping to increase the amount of household material that Gloucester is recycling.
“However there is always more we can do and during National Recycling Week we want to remind people to make use of all the recycling services we offer and to maximise them to their full potential.”
The city council is actively supporting residents in areas of the city where recycling rates are low, with officers visiting residents on bin collection days in advance of a collection and offering residents advice about what can and can’t be collected. In general, residents have welcomed this and it has been encouraging to see that recycling levels are up in the project areas.”
