Plans to swap a telephone mast with a taller and wider structure at a Cotswold golf club have been given the go-ahead despite strong opposition from residents.
Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Ltd has been granted permission to go ahead with the works to the communication station at Painswick Golf Club.
The proposals for the site off Golf Course Road include removing the existing 49-foot monopole which supports two antennas.
And instead it is being replaced with a 79-foot lattice tower which will hold two antennas, two dishes and six emergency response service systems.
The tower is on land within the car park of the golf club and lies within the Cotswold National Landscape.
Painswick Parish Council said it supports the proposals but would like to see the mast to be as unobtrusive as possible.
However, some 59 objections were raised with Stroud District Council over the plans.
They raised concerns over the impact it would be unsightly an have on the Cotswolds landscape.
Objectors also questioned a perceived lack of consultation, the need of an upgrade, expressed health fears and concerns it would impact the value of property.
Two people wrote in favour of the mast and said it would provide reliable, effective, and efficient digital communication that are essential to everyday life.
Another said the increase in the mast size is not unreasonable and people will only notice the mast if searching for it.
Planning officers said the design of the mast is in keeping with the existing infrastructure and the larger lattice mast will not adversely affect the prevailing character and sights of the Cotswold National Landscape.
They said the proposal would provide social and economic public benefits and is certified as being in full compliance with the public exposure guidelines of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.
They considered the plans are in line with planning policies and recommended it for permission.
