As Bonfire Night approaches, The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home is urging people to think twice before lighting up the sky and instead help protect animals frightened by fireworks.

The charity is calling on the public to “Choose Kindness Over Noise”, encouraging supporters to donate the cost of a firework display to help care for dogs and cats who struggle during the loud and unpredictable season.

Fear Behind the Festivities

While fireworks are a source of celebration for many, for animals they can be terrifying. The RSPCA reports that 62% of dogs, 54% of cats, and 55% of horses show visible signs of distress during firework events.

Each year, thousands of pets go missing between 5pm and 11pm on Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve as they panic and flee from the noise. Pets that are microchipped are twice as likely to be reunited with their families, but many spend cold nights lost and frightened.

How the Charity Helps

At the Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home, staff take extra care to keep animals calm and safe — from warm, quiet kennels to classical music and extra cuddles to ease anxiety.

This year, the charity’s “Buy a Dog a Dinner” appeal invites the public to turn the cost of fireworks into comfort — providing meals, warmth, and love for animals that find this season overwhelming.

“Every gesture helps,” said a spokesperson. “Every meal, cuddle, or kind act makes the world a little less scary for a dog experiencing the chaos of fireworks.”

How You Can Help

Instead of lighting fireworks this year, the charity asks animal lovers to choose kindness and donate to make a real difference.
