Construction of new leisure facilities at the Five Acres site is due to begin later this month.
Forest of Dean District Council has confirmed contracts have been agreed with contractor Willmott Dixon, with site preparation and construction expected to start on 27 April 2026 as the project moves from planning into the delivery stage.
The redevelopment will provide indoor leisure facilities including a gym with 53 exercise stations, group fitness studios, soft play space, party rooms and power assisted exercise equipment, alongside a café and community areas.
Upper floors of the former Speedwell Building will also be repurposed to create office and community spaces, including a new outreach base for Hartpury University’s Aspiration Centre.
Outside, the project includes a floodlit 3G sports pitch designed for rugby and football, with a spectator area made possible following funding secured through the Football Association.
Councillor Sid Phelps said the agreement marks “a hugely positive moment” and brings the council closer to delivering the modern facilities planned for the community.
