A pair of optometrists from Gloucester has been nominated for a national award after exceptional patient praise.
Mr. Dermot Keogh & Mr. Adrian Lewis, order of Vision Express Gloucester, are in the running for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises their exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration.
Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages.
‘Optometrist or optician of the year’ is open to practitioners working in any environment, such as a high street business, hospital or a local society who provide outstanding services to people with macular disease.
Adrian says: “We are thrilled and honoured to hear the news. We have always endeavoured to do the best for our patients and with an aging population, we as clinicians are acutely aware of the benefits of an extensive eye examination.
“The Macular Society do a wonderful job. Their digest magazine is an excellent educational journal for Optometrists and the patient leaflets provide both us and our patients with much needed information.”
Sue Williams, who nominated Adrian and Dermot said: “Since Dermot and Adrian noticed the changes in my sight several years ago, they have been nothing but extremely supportive, friendly and professional.
“Every time that I have a change, or a concern, I can be seen on the same day.
“Due to my relatively early age for diagnosis, both my children are given full eye sight tests. My son is Autistic and he is treated with kid gloves.
“Every time we walk past Vision Express, we receive a wave, smile and greeting.

Dermot and Adrian’s nomination will now be handed over to the judges, who will decide on the overall winners and present them with their awards at the Society’s annual London conference on 27 September.
‘Optometrist or optician of the year’ is one of four awards presented by the charity. There are also honours for ‘Clinical service of the year’, ‘Support and community rehabilitation professional of the year’ and the ‘Chairman’s award for volunteering.’
