Players from Gloucester Rugby and Gloucester-Hartpury have united for a powerful new campaign marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, using rugby balls as a creative symbol to spark vital conversations about breast health and early detection.

The striking campaign, launched in partnership with Breast Cancer UK, features Gloucester Rugby’s Cam Jordan and James Venter, alongside Gloucester-Hartpury stars Millie Hyett and Sisilia Tuipulotu. Against a bold pink backdrop — the global colour of breast cancer awareness — the players pose with rugby balls positioned to represent breasts, sending a strong and thought-provoking message about the importance of self-checks and awareness.

Raising Awareness Among Younger Women

Breast cancer rates are on the rise among younger women, particularly those aged 25–49, with cases increasing by 17% since the early 1990s. The campaign’s visuals and messaging are designed to highlight early detection and the importance of knowing the signs of breast cancer, including lumps, changes in shape or texture, redness, or persistent pain.

According to Breast Cancer UK, around 56,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year. While 96% of cases occur in women over 40, the number of younger women affected continues to grow — underscoring the need for education and awareness.

“The most important thing is learning what looks and feels normal for you,” said a spokesperson from Breast Cancer UK. “That way, you can recognise when something changes and seek medical advice early.”

A Partnership with Purpose

The initiative also includes a fundraising drive through BiGDUG, the main sponsor of both teams. The company has pledged to donate 10% of all sales from its Pink with Purpose Shelving range — the same bright pink shelving featured in the campaign — directly to Breast Cancer UK.

“Breast cancer affects so many families, friends, and communities,” said Georgette Beacham of BiGDUG. “We wanted to do something that not only raises awareness but also gives back in a meaningful way. This campaign is about starting conversations and supporting the incredible work of Breast Cancer UK.”

The campaign will roll out across social media and digital platforms this week, encouraging people of all ages to check themselves regularly and spread awareness using sport as a platform for positive change.
