With Christmas fast approaching and festive pressures mounting, The Salvation Army in Gloucester is inviting residents to pause the busyness and rediscover the heart of the season.
On Sunday 21 December, the charity will transform its hall on Eastgate Street into the bustling streets of Bethlehem for a free, family-friendly carol service titled “Bethlehem Revisited – A Carol Service for All.” The event aims to offer an immersive retelling of the nativity story, complete with music, drama and community participation.
James Addis, who leads The Salvation Army in Gloucester, said the service welcomes everyone. “The stable was open to all to receive God’s gift of Jesus, and in that same spirit this event is explicitly open to everyone in our community. We want people to experience the fullness of life with Jesus that starts at Christmas.”
Designed as a journey through the first Christmas, the service will present a series of dramatic “snapshots” of the nativity, performed by both children and adults. These scenes will be interwoven with traditional and contemporary carols, accompanied by The Salvation Army’s well-known musical groups.
“As we look again at the Christmas story unfold in the streets of Bethlehem, we hope it comes alive for us today in Gloucester,” said James. “It’s a chance to pause for an hour and find a moment of peace and reflection.”
The event is fully accessible, with space for buggies and wheelchairs, and requires no advance registration. Attendees can simply arrive and enjoy the service. Refreshments will be served afterwards to encourage community connection.
