Summer Safety Tips For Your Family
Who doesn’t love the summer? It’s warm (sometimes even hot), there’s more sunlight (so more time to do fun things with friends and loved ones), and it’s often the time when we go on holiday. However, there are some specific summer safety issues that you need to think about if you want to keep everyone safe, whether you’re at home or abroad. Read on to find out what they are and how to deal with them.
Sun Safety
The sun is lovely, and most of us enjoy feeling the warmth on our faces and being out in the garden more. However, along with this marvelous feeling comes danger; the sun’s UV rays can cause cancer, and at the very least, they can give you a nasty sunburn. Too much heat can lead to heatstroke. Plus, you can easily get dehydrated. So although we might love the sun, we need to be careful of it as well.
The first thing to do is to use sun cream whenever you go outside, even if it doesn’t seem that sunny – the UV rays can penetrate cloud cover. Make sure your family also wears sun cream and administer it yourself if need be. It’s also wise to wear a hat and to wear long sleeves and trousers if you can (although these should be made of thin material).
Equipment Safety
During the summer, people often go out and about more, and certainly, children like to use their bikes, scooters, and skateboards a lot, either in their own gardens or out in the streets or parks. This is a huge amount of fun, and it’s good for your health, but there are safety precautions you need to take to ensure you can enjoy the time.
Ideally, everyone should wear safety equipment. This includes a good helmet, but don’t forget your skate pads as well. If you fall, you’ll stay much safer if you are wearing this equipment, and you’ll be able to keep going, and the kids can keep playing, rather than having to stop to patch yourself up or even go to A and E.
Bug Safety
Insects are a big problem during the summer. There are more of them, and because we’re outside, we come into contact with them more as well. Of course, they can also get into the house, and this is an issue too. Luckily there are some solutions that will help you stay safe from them.
Firstly, insects love the smell of sweet things, and that includes some soaps. If you’re going to be outside, make sure your family washes with unscented soap, as the bugs won’t be so attracted to you. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of flowerbeds and ponds, as this is where many insects will be found. Plus, think about what you’re wearing. Bugs are attracted to the bright colors of flowers, and if you’re wearing bright colors, they’ll be attracted to you too.
If you are having a picnic or barbecue, using citronella candles can work well, but be careful; you don’t want to swap one potential hazard for another, so never leave these candles unattended, especially when there are children running around.
