Tesco could soon have a third convenience store in Cheltenham town centre if a new planning application is approved.
The retail giant is bidding to open a Tesco Express at 106 Promenade, a prime location previously occupied by Gap and, more recently, Little Dobbies.
If successful, the new branch would sit just nine minutes’ walk from Tesco’s existing Brewery Quarter Express store and eight minutes from its High Street Express near John Lewis.
A larger Tesco Superstore already operates just outside the town centre in Collets Drive.
According to documents submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council, Tesco is seeking:

Full planning permission for a new shopfront and external louvre

Permission for new external signage

Listed building consent for both external and internal alterations
Planning documents from Rok Planning state the unit will continue in retail use under Use Class E, with Tesco Express set to occupy the ground-floor corner site at Promenade and Imperial Lane.
In a covering letter, the applicant added: “Overall, the proposed works will be in keeping with the existing use of the unit and the wider area in terms of its commercial context. They have been designed so as not to disturb the street scene nor impact the historic character of the building and wider conservation area.”
