Tewkesbury Borough Council has received nearly £60,000 in additional government funding to strengthen its work in preventing homelessness across the borough.
The £59,519 allocation will be used to support residents who may be at risk of losing their homes, particularly during the winter months. The council says the funding will help people struggling to keep their tenancies by providing targeted financial advice, practical support and early intervention.
Key areas of focus include helping residents who have fallen behind on rent in both private and social housing, as well as working closely with housing partners such as Bromford Flagship and Julian House. The funding will also support the development of the council’s emerging housing strategy and explore schemes that allow earlier engagement with landlords to resolve issues before they escalate.
Councillor Alex Hegenbarth, lead member for community and housing, welcomed the funding and said it would make a real difference to vulnerable households.
“We welcome this additional funding which will help our more vulnerable households who may be at risk of losing their homes this winter,” he said.
“Our focus is on preventing homelessness before it happens and supporting people to stay in their homes. If anyone is worried about becoming homeless, we’d encourage them to contact us as soon as possible so we can help.”
The funding will also help the council prepare for the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act, which comes into force on 1 May 2025 and is expected to provide renters with greater security. In addition, it will support rough sleepers during periods of severe weather, including the provision of extra accommodation and tailored support.
