Cheltenham MP Max Wilkinson has been promoted to the role of Home Affairs Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, joining Sir Ed Davey’s senior frontbench team.

Mr Wilkinson takes on the brief after a year as the party’s Culture, Media and Sport Spokesperson, where he campaigned on issues including football governance, intellectual property rights for creatives, press freedom and holding the BBC to account.

Reflecting on the move, he said he would miss his culture role but described his new responsibilities as “full of gritty topics at the heart of the challenges facing our nation”.

He added: “I look forward to holding the government to account by standing up for tolerance, decency, compassion, freedom of speech and the rule of law. This is the frontline of the battle for the future of liberal democracy and it’s a role I will take very seriously.”
