Concerns have been raised over tents and rough sleeping in Cheltenham town centre amid claims people have been seen defecating in public.

Three tents have been set up in Imperial Gardens and residents say they have been there for more than a week.

People are concerned the presence roughsleepers across Cheltenham will dissuade visitors from going to the spa town.

There have also been reports of antisocial behaviour amid claims people have been seen defecating in public and walking around naked at night.

One resident said: “I have contacted the council, tried unsuccessfully, the mayor’s office, and the Liberal Democrats.

“The council say they will try and find them accommodation if they will accept it!

“All say there is nothing they can do.

“The situation is impossible, it is as if residents have no rights but rough sleepers can do whatever they like.

“Young children use the gardens which are beautifully kept by daily gardeners and the gardens are a focal point of beauty for residents and visitors who will no longer come to Cheltenham and stay at the Queens Hotel if they have to look at rough sleepers

“It is good time the council did something about this situation in all our parks, the High Street and even the library steps.”

Cheltenham Borough Council is aware of the issue and is committed to working collaboratively to support vulnerable people.

They also say there are services available for people who are experiencing homelessness in the town.

And their public protection team are investigating concerns over waste and antisocial behaviour.

“The council is aware of the individuals currently facing rough sleeping in the Imperial Square area and want to emphasise that those experiencing homelessness in Cheltenham have access to a comprehensive array of support services,” a council spokesperson said.

“These services are provided by the local authority and our partner charity, Julian House, which offers specialised assistance to those in need.

“This programme is specifically designed to assist individuals at risk of homelessness and rough sleeping by helping them secure accommodation and access essential support services.

“Our public protection team is actively investigating any occurrences of environmental crimes, such as waste and anti-social behaviour, and will consider appropriate actions to address these issues.

“We are committed to working collaboratively to support vulnerable individuals and ensure the wellbeing of our community.”
