Gloucestershire County Council has said the former Gloucester Library building on Brunswick Road will continue to play a “significant role in city life” as plans are developed for its next use.
The historic building became vacant following the library’s move to the newly opened City Campus, which now hosts a modern, accessible space designed to serve communities across the county.
Councillor Colin Hay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Assets and Transformation, said the move had created “an exciting opportunity” to repurpose the site.
“The move of Gloucester Library to the City Campus provided a really exciting opportunity to bring the library into a modern setting for all of the communities,” said Cllr Hay.
“Now the building in Brunswick Road provides us with another exciting opportunity. We understand that residents are curious about what’s next for the building and we wanted to bring some reassurance.”
Cllr Hay confirmed that the council’s current plan is to bring several services into the central area of the city, though specific details are still being finalised.
“We’re still considering which ones are the best fit but wanted to assure residents it will continue to play a significant role in city life,” he said.
“We’ll provide another update as soon as we can.”
The County Council says it is committed to making the best use of its buildings and ensuring that key public services remain accessible in central Gloucester.
Further announcements about which departments or services will relocate to Brunswick Road are expected later this year.
