Thousands of spectators are expected to attend this year’s famous Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling event at Coopers Hill.
The event, which is taking place on Bank Holiday Monday (26 May), attracts thousands of people to the site near Brockworth.
The wacky tradition involves daredevils chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down the steep hill.
When is the Gloucestershire 2025 Cheese Rolling Event?
The event will take place on Monday 26th May 2025. The first race will begin at 12pm.
A series of road closures will be in place.
Cheese Rolling History
The first written record of cheese rolling is from 1826, in a message to the Gloucester town crier. However, the tradition is believed to be at least 600 years old.
The event was originally held on Whit Monday, but was later moved to the Spring Bank Holiday. It’s an unofficial event that takes place every year, though it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Did you know? At top speed, the cheese is estimated to reach 70 miles per hour, taking approximately 12 seconds to get from the top to the bottom of Cooper’s Hill.
Who can take part in the Cheese Rolling races?
You must be over the age of 18 to enter the adult races. Children can take part in the uphill races.
Is Cheese Rolling dangerous?
Ummmm…yes! You enter the contest at your own risk. The event is notoriously dangerous, with injuries including broken legs and concussions. The physical risk is part of the thrill for competitors.
