The Forest of Dean is seeking recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere.
An initial nomination has been submitted to the UK Man and the Biosphere Committee for consideration.
If successful, the bid would move to a full application later this year before international review.
Forest of Dean District Council says the status would celebrate the area’s heritage and support its long-term future.
Officials stress the designation would not change planning rules or introduce new regulations, but act as a mark of recognition.
