A Gloucester man has been jailed after violently attacking his partner and injuring their two-month-old baby.
Jason Haynes, 39, of Gloucester, was sentenced to four years in prison at Gloucester Crown Court after being found guilty of coercive and controlling behaviour, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm without intent.
The court heard that Haynes subjected his partner to two years of abuse, including accusations of infidelity, controlling her movements, and demanding photographic proof of where she had been. He frequently shouted at her, humiliated her, and on several occasions resorted to physical violence.
On 2 January this year, Haynes launched a violent assault during an argument, repeatedly punching his partner while she was holding their baby. Both mother and child sustained injuries. The woman was left bleeding and in shock, while the baby was later found to have a fractured skull and was admitted to intensive care at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
Judge Rupert Lowe, sentencing, described Haynes as “terribly psychologically immature” and said he had shown “no concern” for his partner or their child. He added:
“In your frenzy to physically assault the mother, you recklessly struck your own child on the head, fracturing their fragile skull. Her mother thought the child was going to die.”
Haynes must serve at least half of his four-year sentence before being released on licence.
