One of Gloucester’s most historic city centre pubs has closed its doors, as mounting costs and tough trading conditions force yet another hospitality venue to call time.
The Dick Whittington pub in Westgate Street confirmed the closure with an emotional message to customers, thanking them for their support, friendship and loyalty over the past year. The post described the pub as “more than just a place to grab a drink”, but rather a hub for community, stories and shared memories.
In a heartfelt statement, the team said rising running costs had left them with no choice but to cease trading, despite their efforts to keep the business going.
“With trading conditions becoming tougher and costs continuing to rise, staying open is no longer possible. We’ve done our very best, but it’s simply not viable to carry on,” the message read.
The pub’s operators expressed sadness at leaving such an iconic building behind, adding that they hope the venue will not remain empty for long.
“The Dick Whittington is a beautiful, historic building, and we truly hope it doesn’t stay empty for long. It deserves to continue being part of Gloucester’s story,” they said.
The closure adds to growing concern about the future of pubs in Gloucester and across the country, as landlords face increasing energy bills, food and drink price rises, and changing consumer habits.
Owners have confirmed the pub has closed with immediate effect.
