There are plans to open a new superstore at an ‘unattractive’ warehouse building in Gloucester Docks.
Jaspac Developments Ltd want permission to change the use of 12 Llanthony Road to retail.
They have submitted a planning application to Gloucester City Council to change the use of the former data centre at the warehouse-style building.
Consultants working on the scheme say the building is not deemed to be very attractive and it detracts from the setting of nearby listed buildings.
The yard at the rear was occupied by 26 cooling units and six generators but the site has been vacant since September last year.
Developers say the proposal would revert the building to its original ground floor retail use which would provide an active frontage and generate significant footfall in the city centre.
They also say the building’s new use would not become a noise nuisance for nearby residents as the development would not involve any machinery.
“The proposal would bring the vacant property back into much needed appropriate city centre use and would contribute towards the ongoing vitality and viability of the city centre,” the planning documents read.
“The proposed external alterations to the ground floor would preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the original building and the Southgate Street conservation area.”
People can view and comment on the proposals by searching for application 25/00332/COU. The public consultation runs until May 16 and planners are expected to consider the proposals by June 7.
