A new chapter of compassion and community spirit has begun with the opening of Charlie’s Retreat, a dedicated holiday home created to give families facing childhood cancer the chance to rest, reconnect and create lasting memories together.
The retreat, opened by Team Charlie, is located at Hoburne Cotswold Water Park and represents the culmination of years of determined fundraising, generosity and shared belief in turning loss into lasting good.
A Legacy of Love and Courage
Charlie’s Retreat honours the life and bravery of Charlie Ilsley, from Reading, who died in December 2020 aged just 13 after a courageous battle with medulloblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain tumour found in children.
Charlie was first diagnosed in March 2015, aged eight, following weeks of unexplained vomiting and neck pain. He underwent emergency brain surgery, intensive chemotherapy and stem cell transplants, and later achieved remission. Tragically, the cancer returned in 2018 with five tumours on his spine.
Through tireless research, Charlie’s mother Toni identified specialist CyberKnife treatment combined with Avastin therapy. The community responded with extraordinary generosity, raising £80,000 to fund treatment in Turkey. When the cancer returned again in November 2019, almost £100,000 more was raised to support immunotherapy treatment in Germany and Mexico. Despite every effort, Charlie lost his fight the following year.
Inspired by Charlie’s story after watching Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer in 2019, Cheltenham-based Claire Brown helped raise more than £100,000 towards his treatment. She later co-founded Team Charlie in his memory, ensuring Charlie’s courage would continue to help others.
A Purpose-Built Sanctuary
The retreat has been carefully designed to provide comfort, calm and a sense of normality for families living through the relentless pressures of cancer treatment. Its lakeside location was chosen because Charlie loved being near water, whether at a lake, beach or swimming pool, especially during the hardest moments of his illness.
Charlie’s Retreat will be available year-round to families across the UK who have a child diagnosed with cancer. While Team Charlie was initially established in 2022 to provide grants for gifts, treats and family days out, the charity decided to create a more tangible and lasting tribute.
The retreat offers families a dedicated space to escape hospital routines, appointments and uncertainty, even if only for a few precious days.
Community Support Makes It Possible
The project has been driven by remarkable community backing. More than £50,000 was raised through Team Charlie’s Facebook fundraising efforts, with further support coming from grant makers, donors and fundraisers, including Waitrose Cheltenham.
The final piece of funding came in the form of a £20,000 National Lottery grant, which allowed the charity to secure and fully establish the retreat. One particularly poignant event was a memorial walk held on what would have been Charlie’s 18th birthday last year, raising around £1,000 and increasing awareness of the charity’s work.
Voices of Hope
Toni Ilsley, Charlie’s mother and co-founder of Team Charlie, said the retreat reflects everything her family learned during Charlie’s illness.
“Holidays and luxuries become the most important things when you’re trying to make memories with a sick child,” she said. “When one parent has to give up work, money becomes extremely limited. You don’t get to go on holidays or have that fun.
“This retreat will keep Charlie’s name going and his memory alive, and hopefully a lot of people will benefit from it. I know Charlie would have loved the fact that he’s helping others and making a positive difference to build his legacy.”
Claire Brown described the opening as a moment she once only dreamed of.
“When we secured National Lottery funding, I couldn’t quite believe it; it meant we could actually make our dream a reality,” she said. “Charlie’s Retreat isn’t just a holiday home – it’s a lifeline for families experiencing the relentless trauma of childhood cancer.
“We hope to support hundreds of families from this home in the years to come, and what better surroundings than the beauty and tranquillity of the Cotswolds. This is a truly fitting tribute to a remarkable young man who touched hearts not just locally, but around the world.”
