Wholesale retail giant Costco is on track to complete its new 13,000 sqm warehouse in Gloucester this year.
Glencar is progressing construction of the multi-million-pound wholesale warehouse club and fuel station on the former Interbrew site in Eastern Avenue.
The project represents Costco’s first warehouse in Gloucestershire and after three months on site, the steel frame is now complete, and earthworks are nearing completion.
Cladding and roofing works are progressing, with the next key milestone being achieving a watertight building envelope.
Once complete, the development will include a nine-pump petrol station with tyre fitting bay, 612 customer parking spaces and a new vehicle access off Chancel Close.
The warehouse is being delivered under a design and build contract and comprises a wide-span steel portal frame structure, feature entrance canopy, vertical composite cladding systems and a roof-mounted solar panel array.
The external works package includes car parking, HGV hardstanding, drainage infrastructure, service installations and associated civils across the wider 44,000 sq m development site, progressing in parallel with the main build.
Roy Jones, Managing Director at Glencar, said: “This is a substantial scheme that brings together structural steel, civils, infrastructure and sustainability within a live delivery programme.
“We are working closely with Costco and the wider project team to maintain programme certainty as construction progresses toward completion in 2026.”
Paul Landen, Construction Director Europe, Costco said: “Glencar is making good progress on site as works continue to advance on our Gloucester warehouse.
“This development represents an important addition to our UK estate, and we look forward to delivering a high-quality facility for our members in 2026.”
Gloucester City Council approved plans for the site in December 2024 and work began last year.
Alex McIntyre, Labour MP for Gloucester, previously welcomed Costco’s investment in the city.:
“It’s fantastic to businesses like Costco investing in our city. Their new store will provide much needed jobs and will revitalise an area of the city that has been undeveloped for a long time,” he said last year.
Councillor Andrew Gravells (C, Abbeydale) was among those who attended a steel signing event at the Costco site earlier this month.
He said he took a call from Costco several years ago when he was cabinet member at the City Council asking for some advice and information to help the company decide if Gloucester was a viable location for them.
“I ensured that the information he was after was sent to him very quickly, and from those early days I have followed the progress of this major scheme for Gloucester and I’m pleased that I’ve been able to assist in helping Costco come to our great and historic city,” he said this month.
“You are very welcome… you bring jobs, you bring training and skills opportunities and you bring choice and value for the consumer .
“This is a win-win situation and I thank you for working with the City council and the County council to get where we are now.”
