Playtime has received a major boost at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Churchdown, thanks to a community partnership between local housebuilder Newland Homes, the Friends of St Mary’s PTA, and Churchdown Parish Council.

Together, they have transformed a worn-out playground into a vibrant new outdoor space featuring a large trim trail, slide and an all-weather games area for the school’s 220 pupils. The upgraded facilities replace obsolete equipment that had been beyond repair.

As part of the design process, Newland Homes consulted pupils to find out what features they most wanted. “The children were bursting with ideas — sliding, swinging, climbing, balancing, playing team sports — you name it!” said Catherine Sheppard, Planning Manager at Newland Homes. “It’s incredibly rewarding to have helped bring those ideas to life and to hear their laughter as they enjoy their new play space.”

Headteacher Liam Jordan said the new area would have a lasting impact. “Outdoor play helps children burn off energy, improve concentration and learn how to take measured risks,” he said. “This new play area is the icing on the cake — and we’ve even left space to expand if we secure more funding.”

Father Paul Brandon led a blessing at the official opening, attended by pupils, representatives from Newland Homes, the PTA, and local councillor Mary Jordan. “Projects like this show what can be achieved when the community pulls together,” she said.
