A primary school rock band from Gloucestershire is celebrating a festive first after releasing its very own Christmas single – written, performed and recorded entirely by the children themselves.
Pupils at Sharpness Primary School have formed a band called The Rock n’ Roll Express, and their debut track, Naughty or Nice, is now available on all major streaming platforms in the run-up to Christmas. The song is also accompanied by an official music video featuring the young performers.
The band – made up of Skyler, Alfie, Freddie, Albie and Jaxson – worked on the project through SMASH HIT Songwriting School, an innovative music education company founded by Gloucester-based musician and educator Oscar Wenman-Hyde.
SMASH HIT aims to transform music education by blending traditional instrumental tuition with modern songwriting, arranging, performing and recording techniques. Children are encouraged not just to play music, but to create it from start to finish.
Oscar said the release marked a major milestone for the pupils.
“This is a huge achievement and shows not just their musical ability, but their teamwork and friendship,” he said. “They’ve taken complete ownership of the process, and that’s incredibly powerful.”
He added that Naughty or Nice captures the spirit of Christmas in a way only children can.
“The song has a purity that can’t be replicated by adults. It’s catchy, full of hooks and has a sentiment that’s relatable at any age. It genuinely feels like a classic Christmas track – which is remarkable given the band members are as young as seven.”
SMASH HIT’s teaching philosophy focuses heavily on personal development, helping pupils build confidence, self-esteem and collaboration skills alongside their musical progress.
Proceeds from the single will be donated to Erb’s Palsy Group UK, a charity close to Oscar’s heart. He was born with the condition in his right arm and says additional support was crucial in helping him learn to play the guitar as a child.
“By supporting this charity, we’re helping ensure future children with Erb’s Palsy get the support they need, whatever their passion,” he said.
Following the success of Naughty or Nice, SMASH HIT Songwriting School is now looking to expand its work with more schools across Gloucestershire and beyond. Schools interested in taking part can book a free introductory assembly, designed to inspire both pupils and staff.
As for The Rock n’ Roll Express, their first Christmas release has already struck a chord – proving that big musical ideas can come from even the smallest performers.
