At a meeting of full council earlier this week, drugs members unanimously agreed to build a new chapel and crematorium. This supports the option selected by 86% of residents during a recent consultation.
The news is an exciting step forward and the project will begin with design work, mind to decide how the new facility will look and function.
Councillor Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment said: ‘’I am pleased that full council has given their support to a new chapel and crematorium. I strongly believe that this option is the best long-term solution for the future of Cheltenham’s crematorium service and this conclusion is overwhelmingly supported by the results of the public consultation.
‘’We will now be working hard towards the next stage which includes work around the design and we will continue to keep residents informed as we go.’’
Architects Robert Potter and Partners who are experts in advising on crematoria worked with the council to assess the different options for investing in and improving the facility. The £7m new chapel and crematorium will be built on land alongside the existing cemetery on Bouncer’s Lane.
